Stetson University

Edmunds Center Renovation
DeLand, FL

Having served as the home for intercollegiate athletics since 1974, the Edmunds Center at Stetson University needed updating to reflect the university’s athletic traditions and provide a venue that is on par with peer institutions. The primary goal for the project is to better utilize the existing building to improve function and image and to showcase the excitement generated by Hatter excellence and intercollegiate sports.

In 2016, S3 Design completed a feasibility study for a phased renovation and expansion to achieve Stetson’s vision for the facility. In 2020, Stetson reached back out to S3 to rework the study and determine how to phase the project with an a la carte menu of renovations and estimated cost. In 2022, Stetson hired S3 to commence with the design of the Phase 1 renovation and addition per the study.

Recognizing that the existing arena struggles to be inviting to spectators due to its solid, concrete-box nature, Stetson’s goal is to create a fan experience that is more commensurate with a high-level Division 1 athletic program. Situated at the north end of Rinker Field, S3’s new design creates an arrival experience and new building image that provides a transparent and welcoming entry from the campus. The modern aesthetic of warm wood tones and glass anchors the campus with a fresh identity for Athletics while maintaining the charm and scale of its neighborhood.

Interior renovations include a reimagined lobby that features the Hatters Hall of Fame, reorganizes ticketing, concessions, restrooms, and circulation to maximize lobby space creating an identifiable and clear spectator sequence. The lobby also improves the recruiting experience by providing space to showcase the traditions of Stetson Athletics that promote what it means to become a Hatter. Renovations to the second floor include reworking the athletic suites to incorporate more office space as well as creating a VIP Lounge and meeting area for guests to the arena. Future phases improve the athletes’ experiences for practice, training, and performance. This includes improvements to the performance court for game day, providing an additional practice gym, and renovations to locker rooms and training space.
