Alfond Stadium, located in Winter Park, Florida, is the baseball home for the Rollins College Tars. The College approached S3 Design to look at schematic design options to either repurpose the existing stadium or develop a new stadium. It was determined early on that the existing field orientation was less than desirable and that if the field orientation were to be corrected the most cost-effective solution would be to demolish the existing facility and develop a new 750-seat venue with support spaces.
S3 worked in conjunction with the athletic department and baseball coach to assess the needs and develop a building scope that addressed them. This process resulted in a top-loading seating bowl that provided a professional fan experience while tucking much of the baseball operations below a terrace that looked onto the field. In addition, a roofed hitting structure was designed to allow for hitting to take place during bad weather.
As part of the initial study and phasing, Rollins requested that the new stadium be located in a manner that would allow for future utilization of the remaining site for potential relocation of tennis as part of this complex. As a result, a two-phase plan reserved a grass parcel to provide space for future development which integrates the tennis facility into the public sequence through the site.
