St. Mark's School

The Garnder Rink
Southborough, MA

The Gardner Rink at St Mark’s School had its share of challenges. The biggest was the need to relocate home games to other venues during parts of the season due to poor ice conditions from the un-insulated facility. S3 Design worked with Marathon Construction to enhance the facility for the performance of the rink, but also in the fan experience and school branding. In order to insulate the rink, the exterior metal panels were replaced with insulated metal panels, and the exposed space frame structure was wrapped in a reflective insulation material. The ceiling material combined with new energy-efficient lighting has turned a dimly lit rink into a fresh bright space which increases player safety and broadcast quality during the live streaming of games. The main lobby was given a refresh as well that includes new lighting and is highlighted by the butt-glazed window system that allows spectators to feel part of the rink without the cold temperatures. Custom graphics were designed for the lobby and spectator areas to bring additional school spirit. The Gardner Rink looks and performs like a new facility giving the Lions a distinct home ice advantage.
