Cuyahoga Community College - Wellness Center Renovation
This project renovated 22,000 sf of under-utilized space within the existing Athletic Complex to create a modern wellness facility for health and education programs, athletic therapy and treatment center, student activity spaces and community recreation. In addition it provided a new entrance to the complex that distinguished the athletic and recreational programs.
The design team, a collaboration between S3 Design (programming and athletic/recreation design) and Weber, Murphy, Fox Architects (architect of record) developed the program in conjunction with the College to best balance the programmatic needs, the budget and the conditions of the existing building.
By adding a new floor within the existing basement level racquetball courts additional area was reclaimed that now was at street level, with the potential for daylight and views to the street. This allowed the renovation to present a new face to the street by replacing the solid façade with a glass curtainwall. Behind the glass, a weights and fitness studio provides recreational users an open, light-filled experience. In addition the program included a group exercise studio, classrooms, and a demonstration kitchen.
The Central mission of the project was to provide a community outreach that enhances the health and well-being of the community. The facility is available for the community to take part in training, fitness and nutrition education.
While creating the dedicated recreation space, the project also became a teaching tool. The shared aspects of the project capitalized on the synergies between the recreation, physical education, and athletic departments. The project also included a therapy and treatment facility for athletes, and converted the existing shared weights and fitness spaces into a Strength and Conditioning Center for student athletes.
